You shall know the Truth… John 8:32

If you have been a Christian for any length of time, you’ve probably read John 8:32. It’s such a powerful statement that we embrace when thinking about the freedom from the guilt and shame associated with our old lives. Yes, we are new creations in Christ. Old things have passed away and we are free in the newness of life in Christ.

But if you really think about what this verse says, there is a deeper meaning that we can grasp. Is it the Truth that makes us free? Or is it the knowledge of the Truth that makes us free? Let’s take a deep dive into what it means to know the Truth!

The dictionary defines the word “know” as:

  • to be aware of through observation, inquiry, or information.

  • To have developed a relationship with (someone) through meeting and spending time with them; be familiar or friendly with.

The Greek word used in this passage of Scripture (John 8:32) is ginosko. It’s the same word used in Philippians 3:10–that I might know Him. The meaning, for the most part, is the same but with ginosko we also see that it means to perceive; to understand; and to have an intimate knowledge of. And when you apply that to the Truth? Wow!!!

God wants us to perceive, understand, and have an intimate knowledge of the Truth!!!

Okay, so we all know that the Word of God is the Truth. Jesus said that He came to testify to the Truth.

“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” John 18:37

And what was His testimony to the Truth?

Jesus said to him, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6

And the Word tells us:

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:17

You shall know The Truth…

We have established that God wants us to perceive, understand, and have an intimate knowledge of the Truth!!!

Jesus was prepared to die so that The Truth would be made known. Click the link below for an interesting revelation of the trial of our Lord Jesus:

The Truth was put on trial.

What was the Truth that our Lord Jesus testified to? That He is the Truth–the Way, the Truth, and the Life!

And what was the message that He taught?

The Kingdom of God is here now!!!

In His High Priestly prayer to His people just before He gave His life for us, Jesus said:

Sanctify them [purify, consecrate, separate them for Yourself, make them holy] by the Truth; Your Word is Truth. John 17:17 AMPC

In order to truly know the Truth ( to perceive, understand, and have an intimate knowledge of the Truth), our job is to consecrate ourselves to the Lord so that He can sanctify us with His Truth.
